I’m sure you can all see that something’s wrong with the page on the left (click to see a larger version). No offense to the editors at /ak/ (I love you guys, please don’t shoot me), but this image shows just how important basic editing skills are. Here’s the raw for comparison.

Learning the basics is easy, and if you follow along with your own project you’ll end up with something you can be proud to publish!
If you try editing an image, you can upload it here to show off using a site like imgur or puush. And if you pick one of the translated projects from this page, we’ll be happy to help you finish the entire project.

Over the next few blog posts, we’re going to cover the following:

1. Using Photoshop (CS6): you need the right tools to do a good job.
2. Getting raws: how to download from e-hentai/exhentai.
3. Rotating and cropping: notice how the original page is at an angle, and that you can even see the scanner lid at the bottom of the page!
4. Managing your PSD files.

7.  Typesetting: choosing the right fonts at the right size, and centering your text properly.
8. Saving: the left page is 981kb jpg. Our page is 297kb png: same resolution, less than 1/3 the file size.
9. Quality Control: everyone makes mistakes. Friends can spot them and help you fix them.

Today we’re just going to do steps 1-4, starting with a raw scan and ending with a saved PSD. Click “see more” to get started! And as usual, you can use this webchat link to ask for advice.

Step 1: Photoshop

Unless you’re running Linux you should use the latest version of photoshop (CS6). It’s the ultimate editing program, capable of turning this into this using its powerful content aware and text styling tools. Gimp is fine if you’re running linux, but lacks many important and useful features. We won’t cover Gimp in this tutorial, but there are guides elsewhere, and some of our editors who use it would be able to help you.
You can get photoshop at a significant discount, or even for free from your school if you’re a student. While we’d never condone software piracy, there’s also a guy called “thethingy” in a certain bay of pirates who can get you a copy. Google will introduce you to him.

The last important part of installing photoshop is changing the default greyscale setting. Open the program, go to “edit”, “color settings”, and under “working spaces” “gray”, select “sGray”. This is very important for using PNG files.
On some installations you may need to click “more options” to get that choice. Your color settings should look like this, but CMYK and Spot don’t matter at all–you won’t be using them.
Congratulations, you’re done with step 1!

Step 2: Downloading Raws

If you read this blog, you should know about e-hentai and exhentai. We know some great scanners who give us scans privately, but most of the raws we work on are still found on those galleries. Exhentai is just e-hentai without content filters–almost a third of the content on e-hentai is hidden to stop the advertisers complaining.
Here are two plugins that will do it for you, and here is a youtube video that shows you how to do it manually. If you still can’t figure it out… ask in the comments or get on our webchat, I guess.
Once you can use exhentai, you can check out the easy projects we have scripts for on this page, and find one you like. Or you could just pick a gallery you like and edit it: a translator might be willing to translate it for you once it’s cleaned.
If you have any gp or credits, click “Archive Download” and spend them to download the archive. If you don’t, click “Torrent Download” and use bittorrent. If you can’t do either of those things, ask for help here, or save each page individually (make sure to click “download original source” if the image has been resized for the gallery!).
Now you have a .zip file of raw images. Unzip them to a folder, and we can start editing!

Step 3: Rotating and Cropping

Open an image in photoshop and right-click the eyedropper tool. Left click on the ruler tool in the menu that pops up. Now you have a tool to measure what angle the page is at. Zoom in and pick a line that looks like it should be straight: a panel border, a dialogue box, etc. Some artists suck at making their pages straight, so you’ll have to measure several and average them!
Click the very bottom or top of the line, and drag the ruler along the line. Now you have a measure of the line’s angle. If it’s perfectly level, you don’t need to do anything. Many scans don’t need rotating at all.
If it’s at an angle like our example above, click “image” in the top menu, then “image rotation”, then “arbitrary”. The angle you measured with the ruler will already be entered in the box. Just click ok. We had to rotate the example page .76 degrees to make it straight, which is a lot!

Now comes cropping. In the example above you can see the edge of the paper, and behind it the lid of the scanner. And if you rotate you’ll have to crop all this extra black area away.
Use the crop tool to rough-crop the image, like this. Then use a white paintbrush to clean any extra edge-gunk that’s still there. After that click “image”, “canvas size”, and crop the image off to a nice round value, which will be the same on every page. 1100 wide and 1600 tall worked for this scan. Use the anchor setting to choose which part of the page to crop away (by default it will crop evenly on all sides). Make sure not to click “image size” by mistake: this will resize the entire image rather than crop the edges.
If the art on a page goes all the way to the edge, rotating and cropping gets much harder. Redrawing isn’t covered in this tutorial, but we can help you in chat if you want to learn.

Step 4: Managing PSDs

The last thing we’re going to cover today is managing your PSDs.
ALWAYS SAVE YOUR EDITED IMAGES AS PSD FILES. Save them frequently. Back them up onto another hard drive if you can.
If you don’t save your PSD files you won’t be able to make changes or fix errors, and there are always mistakes in every edit. Even if you’re perfect, the translator might decide to change a line!
I save my PSDs for each project in a folder. Once the project is published I zip the folder as a 7-zip archive and save it on a storage hard drive, in case I want to use them for a second version (with a better scan or a tankoubon collection scan printed on better paper).

Once you’ve saved all your project’s images as PSDs, there’s only one more step for this first tutorial. For every grayscale image (every image that isn’t in color), click “image”, “mode”, and make sure the image is set to “grayscale”. Color images should be set to “RGB” (red green blue).

Congratulations! If there’s a manga or doujinshi you want to see edited, you now have the ability to do the most important parts. Why not pick one and try the steps above?

Now this is what I’ve always wanted from hentai. The art is amazing, it’s mostly yuri, it’s characters I love, and it’s pure nastiness at its most intense – why are vomit doujins so rare, anyway? I really love Nyuu’s stuff in general (http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?id=1010501 ‘dat art!), but he usually fails when it comes to providing dialogue and/or the female character’s perspective, which is generally essential for me to get really turned on by something. This work, thankfully, is all from Asuka’s perspective, so we get full impressions of her degradation. I was a bit disappointed that it wasn’t all yuri – I mean, I love delicious fat guys, but they have their place in other stuff – since it’s so rare to see pure yuri nastiness, but at least we got a lot of it. Really hope Nyuu does more like this in the future, because it’s some of the finest hentai I’ve seen.
